Nope.
I just can't stand the thought of some stranger coming in my house and going through my things.

Yes and Yes!!!!
Do I clean up before she comes? NO! But I do straighten up so she can clean everything and not waste time. I even empty the wastebaskets. I want her to spend her time cleaning and scrubbing.
I work full time and have better things to do with my time than to clean all day Saturday. This frees me up to do laundry, run errands, etc. so I have time for my family on Sunday. It's the best money I spend. I'd sooner give up eating and my husband agrees. It has absolutely nothing to do with being lazy. I could run rings around most of you younger people! I haven't cleaned my own home, other than special projects and the major seasonal cleanings, in at least 20 years.
The size of your home has little to do with how long it would take to clean. It depends upon how much there is to dust/clean and how dirty it gets. Do you want laundry washed and folded and beds made or just cleaning done? Do you want all floors washed every visit? What things do you prefer to do yourself? Do you live in an old place with heavy woodwork that's time consuming? There are just too many variables. What you need to do is have someone come out, look at your place and give you an estimate based on what you want done.
Someone here said they should get $8.00/hour. That's pretty much a joke. I'd love to find anyone who would do a decent job for that rate of pay. I'm in the Midwest and even around here they get $20/hour using the customers equipment and supplies if they're worth anything. Those who work for cleaning services get less but it's because they can't or don't want to find work on their own. They seem to do a better job if they're self-employed.
I say... Go for it! You only live once.

Yes. And I do some cleaning before she comes because I don't want her time spent on things like doing dishes and bed-making. If exact instructions are not given, and areas most important to you are not stressed (mine are baseboards), then there is a good chance you won't feel like you got your money's worth. For a 2 BR apartment with 1 bathroom: A decent job can't be done in less than an hour.
It's definitely worth the money.

No, I do not have a housekeeper but there have been many times when I've been tempted to hire one. The reasons I have never got one is (a) don't like the idea of someone snooping around in my house, (b) you have to pay them, (c) you have to arrange to let them in, (d) they probably wouldn't do as good a job as I would do, and (e) sometimes it's hard to find good workers.
I did hire some cleaners once years ago and it was a hassle because they showed up 3 hours late and didn't work as many hours as they said they would but billed me for the full amount.
I might go ahead and hire a housekeeper again for some special occasion I didn't think I could handle all by myself.
But if I did hire someone: I definitely would not clean before he or she got there! What would be the point?

Well.. I used to be that cleaning lady that came every week or so! :) I know all of my clients were VERY happy to be able to do something else instead of cleaning their home. Spending time with their families, doing hobbies, working, etc...
It was great being able to free up my clients so they could DO what they really wanted to do! Money well spent!
(I even hired one of my employees to clean my house once every two weeks... it was GREAT not having to clean the house after cleaning houses all day! WELL worth the money, no doubt!)
A two bedroom apartment would take me between 2-4 hours depending on what my client wanted done, and how often I came to clean. So, depending on what you would like done, the time could vary. However, don't give your housekeeper the opportunity for slacking.
I found that most of my clients did "clean" before I came! (except a few non-married men) :-)
**I charged $25.00 per hour with client supplying the products**

Wife and I work full time. 5 years ago I hired a lady to come clean the house every 2 weeks. I'd give her 2 hours on a 2 Bdrm Apt. if it's a thorough job(make beds, dust, do laundry, fold clothes, load and start the dishwasher, vacuum) just as our lady does. Ain't it crazy how we "clean up" for the Cleaning Lady?

Should you decide to hire someone to clean house for you ask your friends if they have a maid/cleaning person. If so,if they think it's worth it. I did house work for over 10 years. I charged a flat rate. One of my customers said that I was her gift to herself. That it was nice to come home to a clean house. But I have heard stories about some cleaning ladies. I would ask my customers what they wanted done. With the understanding when I was done with thier list I was free to go.
