It is an extraterrestrial plant life that is fertilized through human blood. While never explicitly stated, it appears to be the aliens' primary food source and a key component in terraforming Earth. The fact that blood allows it to grow...that is a logical reason for why Earth was specifically targeted for colonization...ample supply of blood due to overpopulation.

If you listen to the musical verson, it says it was 'Red Weed' the the martians grew on their planet and planned to plant on earth. I haven't seen the movie though so I can't help you there, I'm sorry.
