For women who have children how did you know you were in labor? How did you know when it was time to go to the hospital?

My water broke --- not like you'd expect though. Don't laugh but I thought I just sneezed too hard and lost bladder control a bit (as can happen when your 9+ months pregnant). After a few hours I realized what was going on and called the doc - he told me to haul it up to the hospital and they admitted me.

Everyone's experience is different so if you get close to your due date and anything out of the ordinary happens call your OBGYN and tell them what it is.... they may tell you it's nothing or you may get reamed for not rushing off to the hospital (that's what happened to me)

Good Luck and congrats!

Well, with my first, I had to be induced... so 2 weeks after my due date, I went into the hospital in the morning to be given intravenous drugs to stimulate labor. I never actually went into labor on my own, so I didn't have to guess when it was time. With my second, my water broke early in the morning, so I went to the hospital without any contractions. I still didn't have any contractions once I got there, and eventually had to be induced there as well, since my cervix was not dialating. They only kept me because my water had broken already, and that increases your risk of infection. It just depends... every delivery is different (one took 20 hours, the other just 8) and your body will tell you what to do. Talk to your OB about their regulations for when you should go to the doctor, many want you to go when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, but it depends on your doc's preference.

My water broke , not a big movie style gush...just a smal drip! I went to the hospital and had my baby. Most womens water does not break wit the big gush, rather a slow to moderate drip, my OB says if you think it may have broke put dry panties on & jump up & down a few times if you have another wet dot go to labor & delivery to be checked, due to risk of infection most OBs want a baby delivered within 18 hours of your water breaking. Good Luck

Well, here are some signs:
1) If your water breaks.( of course)
2) If you're having contractions that are close together.

You know it is getting close if your mucus plug comes out, or you have "bloody show". These things could happen a few days before you actually go into labor.

I am not a mother, but what I have read says you should call your doc when you start having contractions that are about 3-5 minutes apart and the cycle has lasted for more than an hour.
