If you have one of those 3.1 Liter engines and it has pretty bad piston slap, If I were to pull this engine and bring it into a machine shop, would they be able to rebore this engine so it would have closer tolerences so this piston slap would go away with the rebuilt engine.

If the knocking goes away when eng warms up, just leave it. You could go to all the trouble and it may start doing it again with the bigger pistons too.

A machine shop will re bore all cylinders and use new over sized pistons. If it is a damaged cylinder they could sleeve the bad one and put a new original size piston back in it without touching the other ones and using the old pistons. Now a machine shop can bore to any Clearence they please. some racing and boat motors we have done(engine masters fresno, ca)we actually make them looser on the main bearings and bore at the same time we would tighten up the rod bearings.so its up to your particular application and preference.

If you bore the cylinder, you'll have even loser fitting pistons. You'll make it worse, not better. (unless you are talking about up-sizing the piston as well)
