Look it up in Wikipedia.com., i.e, John Kenneth Galbraith, Adam Smith, etc.

because there is no common theory in economics. it's not a specific science, but economists tend to break into schools that follow a particular philosophy

even the cold war, usa v. russia was a war about economics and a very radical difference in perspective.

a few famous ones you could start with are adam keynes who invented classical economics, the generally recognized laws of supply and demand

then there's keynes, he was more recent. he was popular after the depression for introducting the idea of government as an actor in economic affairs, to maintain consumption and growth.

and the republicans love those chicago school guys. if you real up on those three, adam smith, keynes, and the chicago school, you should have a bit of a feel what it's all about and who you want to write about and why you feel the way you do.

If you are supposed to write a research paper on an economist you could do your paper on Adam Smith, "the father of economics," or on Karl Marx "a classical economist," or on John Maynard Keynes, the father of "fiscal and monetary policy."

Any of those three have plenty of information on them out there on the Internet.
