The problem with looking into the whole slave thing is people seem to insist on placing modern views on the people of a couple to many centuries ago.
I feel confident that the people who lived then considered a slave as no more then a farm tractor or dish washer would be viewed today. Now to your question.
The trade of agricultural equipment is and will remain one of the most important trades of any nation. The slave trade was much the same, so yes it was one of the most important, perhaps not the most important,
There was a explosion of agricultur in many parts of the world during those centuries, largely due to the slave workforce in those parts of the world.
Example: Brazil, had a small tribal population, there was not enough food production to maintain even a small city, when the people from North Africa and Europe arrived, the farming technology came with them, Still did not produce enough food to maintain colonies. Upon the beginning of slave labor there was a boom in economics and trade of other materials. Based on food production. And city's grew accordingly.
