As an example, the screw thread on the hose of my vacuum cleaner runs in the opposite direction from what you are more familiar with. This hose attaches to a 'plug' at one end and a nozzle at the other.

If u go to www.hudsonfasteners.com
u will note they have left handed screws
my understanding and i know i am laying myself bare a little is that the thread which usually works in a clockwise motion is simply reversed.
as a scientist, i understand this principal but have never come across them personally.
it seems so obvious.
good luck.

Yes you can. They are called a reverse thread (or French thread) screw. They are typically used on gears that spin a direction that would cause a convential thread to loosen.
You can go to almost any hardware store and ask. They are not popular by any means, but they are available.
You might want to get on the web site for your product and order it. Of course, shipping would probably cost more than the part.
Good Luck!

Can't remember ever seeing any left-handed screws, just the occasional left-handed thread on other things.
There's no good reason why they shouldn't exist, though, is there ? It's just that right-handed has become the convention over the years.

check the pedals on a bike one is right hand thread the other one is a left handed thread it is done this way so the revalution of the pedells are tightning if theyn were both the same thread one pedal could undo itself and fall onto the road and your foot could hit the road and throw you into the path of a car

Yes - Some equipment and fixtures are fitted with counter-clockwise screwed fixings to prevent loosening when rotating in a clockwise direction.

There are screws that do up to the right and undo to the left.
There are screws that do up to the right and the bit to the left is missing so they cannot be undone.
For left handed screws, use your left hand.
