Is this a lost tradition?

In the carol 'The Most Wonderful Time of the Year', there's a line about 'scary ghost stories'. Does anyone know anything about this?

yes,people did tell many tales,including ghost stories,by the fireplace on xmas eve.this gave charles dickens the idea to write "a xmas carol",which,after all-is a ghost/xmas story.

I've wondered about that line for decades.

All I can think of is that it is a reference to the ghosts in A Christmas Carol.
