What accounts for the ups and downs of Republican and Democratic voters between 1982 and 1990. When the Republican party voters increase the Democrat voter participation decreases.

A lot of voters don't believe the system is fair anymore (if it ever was). Hanging chads, lost ballots from black districts, Diebold machines. Some want to give up, which is what they want.

Usually, when things are running smoothly, a republican promises years of prosperity. When the republican runs the country into the ground, we elect a democrat who gets the country on its feet...most democrats come to power this way

Roosevelt after Coolidge
Kennedy after Eisenhower
Carter after Ford
Clinton after Bush

and probably a democrat after Bush Jr...it's an endless cycle

Lot's of factors in both parties, I'm sure. If I had to pick I'd say the contract with America on the republican side, and infighting on the democratic.

That's just the natural order of things in a democracy. Happens all over the world.
