Most feedback loops are of the "negative" variety. Positive feedback is indeed much more rare. The basic function is to not let processes get out of control. Negative feedback occurs when the final product of a pathway inhibits the pathway at some point. What does this mean? When enough product is made, the pathway will automatically stop by feedback inhibition so it does not make too much of said product.
