A bit over-rated i think...i don't think he is quite as good as some people think he is!but he was a tremendous goalscorer for every club he ever played for and at international level!!

people who don't know what they are talking about sometimes say he only holds records for goalscoring because of his penalties....but several points on that subject...

1st - he's not the only striker to have been a penalty taker(Lineker to name just one other!).

2nd - you still have to score the penalty!(he didn't miss many!)

3rd - if you look at the stats...even if you take off his penalties,he's still quite a long way in front as the highest scorer in the premiership!

i think his biggest mistake was returning to Newcastle,as they have no chance of winning anything!

i don't know what is about N'castle ( i have nothing against them) but i have never felt that they will win anything...even when Keagan was there and they came so close...i still bet against them... they never give me any confidence at all!! how can a club as big as them...who have spent millions and millions over the years, not have won a major trophy since 1955 i think it is!!???
it must be something to do with the backroom set up?!

i'm a Spurs fan,so am constantly annoyed that we have some great players, but don't win as much as we should!! Newcastle fans must feel like they couldn't even go out and buy a trophy!!

Alan Shearer Career

I was saying the other day that for most of us [United fans], ribbing Alan Shearer is just banter. I think that most people know that he is generally a good guy, and it's just football p*ss taking. Having said that, there are some people who would fight over it, but they're just scumbags, I don't think they represent the majority. However, he's certainly not the best footballer ever in the Premiership. I don't think he'd be in the top 10. And Fergie wanted him in 97, but if we'd bought Shearer we may well not have had Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sherringham or Ruud Van Nistelrooy, so in retrospect I'm happy he didn't come.

May be success is over-rated.

Success is not always about making so much money- or in this case, winning trophies.

Shearer was a success if he looks back and has no major regret, eg refusing to join Utd, which would have undoubtedly meant he retired with every available club competition medal.

If he achieved his dream by playing for his team and becoming a Magpie idol in the process, then he was definately a successs.

I wonder if he would have made the same choices given a chance to go back 10 or 11 years?

For a start -- he has scored a lot of goals both for club and country.
There are a lot of great players who do not win trophies in their career.
Alan is a great scorer and tough player.
Alan turned down Man U to join his beloved club Newcastle U. How many players can afford to make this decision ?
The reason he does not have a lot of trophies is because he did not join teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and ManU.
Alan Shearer will easily feature as 1st 11 for any of these giant clubs.

Captained his country.
Top scored at Euro 96,
Became the worlds most expensive player at the time when he joined Newcastle for £15m.
Became the only player to score 200 goals in the premier league.
He was an awesome player. If he had gone to a decent club like Man Utd or Arsenal he would have won mountains of trophies, but being a Geordie he wanted to play for Newcastle. An odd choice but there you go

Pity more players aren't like Alan Shearer unlike the glory hunters you get nowadays. Scouser rooney goes to man utd. Gunner Ashley Cole goes to Chelsea. Campbell went from Spurs to Arsenal.

Yes he was defo a success. Him and Henry have by far been the best Premiership strikers.

He was loyal to his home town club and broke their all-time scorers record. He scored 30 goals in 63 internationals for England, putting him in the top 6 of all time scorers. It's a shame that he didn't win more trophies, but he was an excellent marksman. Lineker also did not win many trophies, but is the second top scorer fro England, so you can not judge success by medals alone.

playing soccer is not about winning the medal, cup or money. it's not about where do you play, whom do you play with and how long you've been playing. self-satisfaction, passion, and having fun is what it's all about. though shearer retired with only 1 medal or trophy, as long as he enjoys his spell as a soccer player, then it's all good and he's still one of the best players. in fact, every person that have ever tried to play soccer can be thought as the best player, because he/she dares to try to play and only the players how the describe the feelings. peace out players!

Look at all the goals that he scored in his career, which will show you he was not over rated. Football is a team sport, you don't win trophies with one person. One of the best strikers out of England. A strikers job is obviously to score goals and you can't say he was not successful in that department.
