Are we doomed to mediocrity? There are significant limits to the number of things that we can see and accomplish in this life and the quality of which we see and do them, no matter how hard we try.

The only solution to this problem that I can think of (without assuming an afterlife) would be a unified consciousness or an "overmind" for our species. Any ideas on how to go about this or any better ideas (note: silly is also acceptable).

Yes, but it's not like you're going to clap your hands and everything just turns out right :) You have to work for it.

I believe what you need is not an idea, you need extensive search for truth in religions, spiritual systems, occult, whatever.

Just find out where you fit, but know this.. the end of every spiritual system is to achieve this unified conciousness you're talking about. However, you can only join it yourself and be one with everything and everyone, but you cannot make others do this, yet you alone reaching that state makes a great contribution to the spiritual matrix already.
