There are never presents under the tree. She also puts fake presents under the tree so when other family members come to visit they think me and my sister are getting gifts. The fake presents are just empty boxes with pretty wrapping covering them. Is this weird? Why would someone do this?

Probably because society has made her feel that if she doesn't buy lots of expensive gifts she is in some way inferior. People are too ashamed to admit that they are not like everybody else. Let your mother know it doesn't matter to you what other people think or say and then maybe then she will stop.

She probably likes the way the tree looks with presents under it and since Santa doesn't come til xmas eve, she puts substitute ones under there to create a look of holiday joy. If there are no gifts when you wake up on xmas morning, just the empty ones, then I take back my answer and say she might be a little goofy. Hopefully Santa brings you presents!!!

no this isnt weird at all...i think your mother just has alot of christmas spirit...i think a christmas tree looks much better with wrapped presents under them....at my house we wrap the gifts we buy for other ppl early and place them under the tree.

Shame and embarassment if you are poor.

The desire to fit in if you are Jewish.

The desire to hide her true religious beliefs if her family practices a religion that allows Christmas gifts and she practices one that does not.

Without knowing why you are not getting gifts it is impossible to guess her motives.

It looks good doesn't it? It isn't all about receiving on Christmas. It's about giving how about swallowing your self-centeredness and trying to make this year special for your Mom?Make her feel loved and appreciated and maybe one year those presents might be real.

She probably doesn't want anyone to think she doesn't have any "holiday spirit" so this is a simple, might i add, funny way to fool them.
