If a 17 or 18 year old killed someone, could they be in prison/jail instead of a detention place. What is the youngest age you could be in a prison/jail for that crime. -This is for a writing project, not a personal matter, by the way :) -

18 years of age you are an adult. Youngest I know is 14 years of age. They stay housed at a juvenile detention facility until 18 years of age and then is transferred to a state prison.

I was in Juvenile prison at age 12 at Maclaren School for Boys. Don't let the name fool you. It's located in Woodburn, Oregon. Also research Hillcrest located in Salem, Oregon. These are both Juvenile lock down facilities. I was incarcerated there until I was 18. Good luck on your report.

It depends on the state. In most states it is 14 years old to be tried as an adult, although I know of one state that has done it to a 12 year old.

yes, 17 yo and even 16 yo can be tried as adults if the crimes they commit are extremely violent,or they have a long history of crime and there is little or no hope of rehabilitation.
