Are you friends with the guy? Do y'all have anything in common? I would suggest finding something out about the guy and figuring out if you can be friends. That's the only way you're going to get intimate enough with him to find out what his preferences are, or his deepest fantasies that he might not share with anyone else.
Without that, there's no risk-free way to bring the subject up, I don't think. People say that a lot of guys who act hyper-masculine are just trying to overcompensate for feelings they have for the same sex, but that's not always true and it's not worth the risk to use that as a rule, especially if the guy doesn't trust you or know you well.
Friends first, and proceed with caution, I would say.

Well...I dunno how to say this, even tho goth and emo and really different, we tend to stand on the, how do we say, same level of the high-school-hierarchy-of-eeeevillll. In my case, I totally fell for a jock, I mean down-right OBSSESSED. Adn the thing was, he was into me to. BUT. And a big one, he only was "into" me so he could use it against me with his jock friends. Im not trying to dishearten you, but Im asking you to proceed with caution. Unless u know for SURE that he is into other guys, and his friends KNOW it too, then go ahead. But if you don't; well, be careful. Please. I've moved on since then. I found this incredibly hunky goth guy (hunky+goth = RARE) and we've been together for nearly three years now - he means every ******** thing in the world to me now - and I can't imagine life without him. Sometimes what we really want is right around the corner - the question is if we crane our heads far enough to look.

That could be the worst thing you could ever do in your whole life, if you don't know anything about him at all. Try to find things out about him a little first, before you jump into bed with him. Some things take time, you know.
