Had a friend with a lab, one with a golden. We have black lab-pit mix. Labs seem to have a bit more personality and be rowdy players that like to run. Great, fun dogs, but need toys to chew on and go for walks. Goldens seem to be calmer, nice , gentle dogs that like everybody. They seem to lay around a bit more. Both are great, it just depends on how much attention you are ready to give. Labs need more. And they get really cold! Be prepared to share your covers!

Most of the Goldens or Labs you will find at the pet store or advertised in the local paper are pretty wound up, but either breed is an equally good choice from a reputable breeder. Breeders that show dogs to champion conformation tiltles breed very calm & mellow tempered dogs. Find these good breeders by going to www.akc.org & locating your closest chapter of the breed's club. Buy from a breeder that tests & certifies their breeding dogs free from hip & eye problems with organizations like OFA (or Penn Hip) & CERF. This is the best way to get a healthy, well behaved new friend.
Beyond this, the choice is better decided by: do you like the longer or shorter coat? Their personalities are much the same, both being retrievers.

Golden wins. I have a Golden, best dog ever. I have never owned a lab but have known people that have. One thing I find about labs, is that they get lazy and fat. Goldens are always in a good mood. But with my Golden... he is very high maintenance. He requires a lot of attention. I mean a lot. He is like having another kid, and will let you know if you are not showing him enough attention. He will find you and make you give him attention...ear rub and back scratches are all he really wants... and a milk bone or two

Depends on what you are going to do with him. Is he going to be a hunting dog or just a member of the family? Outside dog or inside dog? Small kids or no small kids?
Ask yourself those questions first then answer them. If you want a good retriever then both are good. If he is going to be around small kids then I'd go with the golden retriever.
