history of ocean pollution?

i just need some history on the subject.

Mankind figured that the ocean was so vast and so plentiful that it was IMPOSSIBLE to pollute it. Man thought that anything that he could ever create and dump into the ocean would get diluted so quickly that there would be no way of detecting it. But man later learned that the pollution does not get dilluted but instead it stays in one spot and eventually washes back up on the shoreline.
