With this little information is going to be hard to give you an answer, here goes a couple though: Do you have a DVD rom Drive? If you have an old computer most likely it came with a CD rom drive that only reads CD's but not DVD's.
Do you have a DVD rom drive and it used to recognize DVD's but now it doesn't, try uninstalling the drive and booting your computer as follows: click on Start or in your desktop right click on my computer, then click on properties, click on the Hardware tab and look for Device Manager and click on it. Look for DVD/CD-ROM Drives and click on the "+" sign until you see the drive that you have, right click on it and click uninstall, then reboot your computer.
Windows will reinstall the DVD Rom and it should now recognize your DVD's. Good Luck

Your computer might not have a DVD Drive. Or you need a program that you have to install for the DVD drive to recognize the DVD.

You computer might not have a DVD drive in it. It might just be a CD drive. In order for the computer to recognize DVD's it must have a DVD drive installed.

It's strange because my girlfriend didn't recognize me in the street yesterday until I took my sunglasses off.

Tell your vain DVD to stop mucking about and to take it's sunglasses off and I'm confident your computer will recognize the DVD and say: "Oh It's you, DVD!

I hope I have helped.

The first two people are right. Also the DVD might be in a different format than the ones that your computer is familiar with.

there could be many reasons. if you don't have a dvd-rom drive, that would certainly prevent it from recognising the disc. also, if you are trying to play a movie, you need a media player, i suggest vlc. it's free.
