Depends on what you are looking for. I would get Ipods because they have more all around things, but are more expensive. MP3 players do the same thing as Ipods, but are more limited to playing music. Something like a Creative Zen is a little cheaper and does many of the Ipod functions. If you want looks, like many people do, definitely go for the Ipod. They are the sleekest as MP3 can be the same size, but look hulky. If you have the money go for the Ipod all the way. If not try getting something like a Creative Zen. If you are going to get the Ipod you should choose depending on the features you want. Ipod Nano is for portability and looks but has less memory. If you get a Video you have much more memory, pictures, videos, but it is much bigger. And yes you do have to pay for the songs you download.

Ipods are MP3 players. As for the brands and types go, you can choose from a wide variety. I would recommend trying to purchase one that has a port for a secure digital(SD) card. That way you can always add more memory as opposed to the Ipod that limits the amount of memory you have to work with. Also, when your Ipod's battery dies, you have to send it back to Apple for a new battery or you can junk it. Other MP3 players give you the option to buy batteries. It is your choice though.

An Ipod *is* an MP3 player.
You can buy an "Ipod" (Using the term loosely as an MP3 player) from different companies. My brother bought a Creative ZEN. It's really awsome. I like it.
