I do. The answer is to diversify. Do lots of different things with your art, including freebies. Get a name for yourself in your community, don't hesitate to let the local press know when you do something special.
If you want to make money at it, you need to create what people are interested and want to buy, even if it's not something that you normally would create. But if you can do that sort of thing, that will help finance your true passions, whatever they may be. AND you just might discover a new way to do your art and enjoy it.

sometimes i make money as an artist because my wife (also an artist) and i will do a wall mural...and i do other decorative finishes and gilding because that is what i do as a painter (house painter). have we sold much art? no. however i know three people who support themselves with their art...and i intend to pick their little brains untill i find out how to market my art the same way they are. it seems starving is just a part of being an artist. i'd love to quit my day job and just do art but i like to eat and travel to see the grandchildren. there are all kinds of books on how to sell your art and approach galleries...save your money kid, the only person who's going to make money on that deal is the book publisher and maybe the author....
