Any computer might crash. There is a chance you could get a less reliable computer, but most likely it will be just as reliable as a new one.

You can think of a "refurbished" item as one that's already had it's problems fixed. But, as with any used product, it will be a little more worn out than a new one.

I recomend getting the "Apple Care" extended warranty with it, then if it breaks any repairs (unless you physically damage it) will be free.

Getting a laptop repaired is often quite expensive. If either the LCD screen or the motherboard (the main circuit board inside the laptop) has to be replaced it can cost so much that it's cheaper just to buy a new laptop!

The parts on laptops that most often fail, however, are the hard drive and the keyboard, usually either of those can be replaced for under $100 if you do it yourself (or have a computer "expert" friend do it) and not extremely difficult to do.

If you have the Apple Care, you don't have to worry about all that.

If your hard drive dies you'll loose all the files that were on it and have to re-install the operating system and any programs/files that you want once the new HD is put in. It's always a good idea to keep copies of any important files backed up. You can burn them to a CD-R, DVD-R, or keep copies on another computer, or on another hard drive, such as an external one.

There are always risks with anything you buy, be it a computer, car, home appliance, whatever.
I have a PB G4 refurb from Apple and the only "crash" it's had since I bought 9 months ago was the DC In-Board failed. Apple repaired it under warranty, including shipping.
I would recommend you keep a backup of your important files just in case your refurb (if you do get one) "crashes", I do.
