I have been looking for a new cell phone for my Cingular service. I was wondering if 900/1800/1900 gsm band will work in the USA or if the 850/900/1800/1900 bands are the only ones that work? Thanks

I was looking at the Cingular GSM maps and they show the 1900 band having more area coverage than the 850 band? It was viewed at GSMworld.com

Each country has a different GSM band..some do in fact share bands...but..that's the reasoning for many.

your 900/1800/1900 tri-band phone is a good choice for most of the world. the "standard" GSM frequencies are 900/1800. most phones sold do support 1900. there is some use of GSM 850 in the US, but, 1900 is the standard.

GSM is also somewhat new in the US..with the merged AT&T/Cingular merging thier TDMA network over to GSM and TMobile having offered it for a few years. It's coverage in most areas is questionable, despite Cingular's claim of having the least dropped calls..it's hard to hold a call when you lose signal.

Cingular's primary band is the 850 band, which is the lowest freq. of the four(which is best penetrating buildings etc), cingular also use the 1900 band(also known as PCS) but much less than other carriers. T- mobile only uses the 1900 as does sprint(which is CDMA). So if you have cingualr you need a phone with the 850 band.
