Do you mean the novel Backwater by Joan Bauer? It is a good book although it's not my favorite by the author. It is about a teen girl's quest to discover, create, celebrate her family history. She ends up going to visit an aunt or perhaps a great aunt that has been estranged from the family who is a hermit in the mountains.
