The mare's estrus cycle lasts 5-7 days and they usually ovulate the last 24-28 hours of showing heat. You will be able to tell when she has ovulated because her heat showing will decrease greatly. Of course, there are some mares who do not show heat at all and there are some who show them in atypical ways. And yes, they can be extremely picky on the stallion they mate with if you live cover them. I knew a mare and stallion at the last place I worked for who absolutely hated each other. They would try to kill each other if they were anywhere near the other. She would show heat for the other stallions, the geldings, and even the mares, but she never showed heat for that stallion.
I found a page that describes the entire estrous cycle of the mare for you. Hope it helps.

They are in heat 3 to 4 days and no they are not picky. However they have to really be ready to submit to the Stallion. If they are in the first day or two of there heat cycle they are probably going to be very mean to that stallion and not stand still for him. If a mare has been bred several times before she will take the stud easier. If this is her first time she will probably kick your stud a lot. You might try some breeding shackles for her back legs so she don't hurt your stud. Good luck.

I worked with a vet for AI at a breeding ranch and they are usually in heat only 3 - 4 days, sometimes more, sometimes less, but if they are ready and there is a stallion around, they will start "horsing" around. They squeal, present, etc. It can look violent and if you don't know what your doing, please don't stand around to watch, you could get hurt. If she is not interested, the stud could get hurt. I would NEVER use breeding hobbles on a maiden mare....just imagine if you were in HER position! I've never seen a mare "refuse" a stud if he knew what he was supposed to do. They do get impatient if he is new at this and will try to "teach" him what to do, but as for refusing? I don't think so unless she has had a bad experience with him in the past. BTW, they go into their heat cycle every month during the spring and summer in the warmer climates (sometimes even into the early fall) and go out in the winter. Since they are pregnant 11 months, this is to ensure the babies are born in the time of the year they will have the best chance for survival (it's a "wild horse thing")

Horses are grenerally in heat for about 4 to 7 days. Sometimes it just depends on the horse because a horse may not always show signs of being in heat.

Mares are usually in heat for 3-4 days. But it also depends on the mare. Sometimes, if mares haven't been breed before they tend to kick out at the stud. This is why alot of people use artificial insemination on there horses. But it is not at all cruel to use the breeding shackles. The Thoroughbred breeding industry can only use live breeding and some of the mares that come in for breeding are "maiden mares". They also sedate the mares some of the times. This is for the safety of the stud and the mare.

My mare usually is in heat for a week. And YES they CAN be picky because Jessi (horse) gets into heat and then when we try to breed her she isn't interested in the stallion, even though he neighs to her and chases her, but then she tries to kick him.
Well I hope you better luck with your horse!

I believe they are in heat for 2 weeks. Some stallions can be picky about the mares they service.
