No, I don't conform to anyone. They are in America so they need to learn the language, it is a common courtesy.

We should never conform to anyone. As a show of respect, they should learn English. Just because Mexico borders the United States doesn't give them special rights. My Italian grandparents learned English because they loved America and wanted to be American. If Mexico is what they really love, then they should stay there and speak Mexican.

they should learn to use english.

I live in a certain part of southern CA where everything, for some odd reason, is in spanish. I somethimes wonder are there any other parts of the country that are like this?
Whenever I'm at work people come to my register speaking nothing but spanish, but they look at me as if im an idiot because I cant understand them. I went to a Starbucks one day and the baristas couldn't speak english, so they had to bring the manager out, just to take my order in english......

why is it this way?

I am married to a man of Mexican descent. He went through the proper channels of being an American citizen before we were married and he spoke English when we met. I said this to show that I am not prejudice and the Mexicans that I know are wonderful people. But to answer your question, yes I think they should speak English and I'm tired of the American people bowing to people from other countries. Come into our country legally and then if you need government assistance and want your children in our schools that is fine. This is America and if they love our country so much and want to become a citizen then they should be willing to learn our language.

Personally I feel like there is nothing wrong with Americans learning Spanish. I know that this is our home, and that English is the official language, but it's very common in Europe and Asia, because of the high density of different languages and cultures for people to take a second language.

We have had it pretty easy in the language department because of the way we are situated both geographically and economically to this point, but I think for Americans living in areas with a growing Spanish speaking population, learning the language doesn't have any negative effects and has a lot of potential for positive ones, such as providing us with Americans that are capable of teaching English to new residents.

I think anyone that wants to live in this country should learn English and use it in all public transactions.
From schools, stores to Government, English should be the order of the day.
The ability to communicate with one language has long been one of our strengths. ANY citizrn has been able to communicate with ANY other, with no translator.
Diluting that with any other language is wrong.

they should learn english. it's only fair. if i went to another country, i would never expect the people who lived there to speak any differently for me. that's not right at all - speak the language of whatever country you are in.

How about we BOTH learn? They learn english and we learn Spanish or Indian or French. Would it kill us? Learning an extra language increases intelligence. It makes you more employable, it makes travel more accessible and fun because you aren't hindered by a language barrier. And it makes you more confident because you have to speak to people you normally wouldn't when you're unsure of yourself.

So, what are people losing by learning another language? Let the schools make it mandatory up to a certain age, make it free for anyone to take up to a certain proficiency. It will only increase our culture.

We should RESPECT those that do not. If you plan on initiating dealings with non-English speaking countries, have enough respect to either learn the language or arrange for an interpreter. If they plan on initiating dealings with us, they should arrange for an interpreter.

Optimally, both sides will have one to insure accurate communication.
