i'm not talking about games that save with a memory card

the best example i could give is tactics ogre for the gameboy advance. the first batch release of this game had a battery inside to facilitate saving. apparently, there was a second batch that contains no battery that i could see, but still saves. how? both chips looked exactly the same, with the exception of the round battery.

With newer 'cartridge' style games, it uses Flash RAM, the same technology used in little portable 'keychain' USB drives and stuff. That does not require a battery to keep the memory, so it is a more reliable system.
