Unfortunately, in India, the idea that political offices are honorary offices has given way to an idea that it is a lucrative profession. It is perceived as sport, where one can amass wealth without much liability and limitations. Hence, the criminalisation of the polity in India. A serious attempt at cleansing the electoral system debarring the criminal elements is the crying need of the hour. The Election Commission of India has been playing a proactive role in conducting the elections free from malpractices. But, it also realises the need for electoral reforms.

When ideology taking back seat in Indian politics, caste and criminal personalities leading the nation. After Jayaprakash Narayana, there was no national leader who inspired the Indians on a ideological count. Even the left and BJP parties became victims of power politics when its leadership resorting to all below-the-belt tactices to gain their superiority within their own parties.
