St. Christopher is a guardian to travelers...whether it be on an actual physical journey or a journey through life. He is there to protect. I am Catholic and we would get things like a Rosary, a Catholic Children's Bible, a necklace with a saint (such as Mother Mary) on it, a Crucifix, etc. Something like this is a good gift idea so that the parents can take it to be blessed during the Christening or anything other time.
If you aren't required to get something Catholic, something from the heart is nice. Some sort of gift with thought.

Here is information on St. Christopher.
Saint Christopher died a martyr during the reign of Decius in the third century. However, he was quite possibly only a legend created by popular story-telling, so he is no longer on the official list of Saints. He is known for carrying travelers across a stream (which is why he is the patron of travelers), including a child who was surprisingly heavy. It turned out that the child was Jesus bearing the weight of the world.
As for a catholic gift, I would suggest a child catholic bible, a rosary or any number of necklace charms of saints.

Yes buy him a St. Christopher. Its a necklace with the Saint on it. You can find it at any christian store, or try the internet. You could buy him his first baby bible. Trust me, go to any christian store in your town. Tell them you need a special gift for a new born. They will know exactly what to get.

The bastismal charm is a good idea, whether it has St Christopher or anything to mark the occasion. A pewter cross, or a pewter tube that holds the bastismal records.
