Light bulbs were the first electrical item that was useful to the common person in their home, as well as being affordable. Edison, in inventing the light bulb and all the related power generation and transmission equipment, invented a system by which entire cities could be lit with electrical lights. Once power grids were set up for electric lighting, other devices using electricity became feasible and cost-effective.

It also increased night activity, because it's a lot easier to light large areas with light bulbs than candles. Other useful applications were on ships - where fire is always a deadly threat. Being able to use electric lights allowed ships to not have to use candles or prisms to redirect sunlight.
