The humane society will kill the pet if nobody takes it home after a certain time period.

I would recommend getting a pet from the humane society, generally the fee that you pay at the humane society includes having your pet spayed or neutered, which can be costly taking it to the vet. You can feel good about that fact that you are saving an animal, that the humane society may have to eventually put the animal down if they cannot find a home. A lot of pet stores the animals are in horrible conditions, the people at the humane society take good care of their animals, they love animals and it is not about making money to them.

Pet stores are not the most animal friendly places, actually. Breeders often speak of them disparagingly. If you go to the human society, you have giving a dog a second chance. They sometimes make the sweetest pets, too. Very thankful to have a home. I have a lab that I got through a rescue center. He is the sweetest dog I have ever known. Never a problem and aways affectionate and fun to be around. I say go with the humane society. You will feel good about saving a dog in need. And the dog will feel good too.

When you buy from a humane society you are saving the life of a precious animal that someone else has cast off, usually for no reason other than that they were too lazy to take care of the pet.

When you buy from a pet store, you reinforce 'puppy farming'.

I think if people stopped buying from pet stores, there would be fewer pets at the humane society.

Here's the difference: Dogs left at certain shelters may be put to death after a certain amount of time because of space. So you may be saving a life. Also, dogs are cheaper (usually about $60). Most are associated with a vets office and will offer first vet visit free. The dog is spayed and neutered so you won't have to worry about puppies. However, you will never know the exact breed because most times puppies or dogs won't come as a family. Some dogs may have been abused or abandoned and may have some "issues". But, all-in-all, they just wanna be loved like any other animal.

Humane Society animals will have to be put to sleep if no one adopts them.

Pet stores often deal with "puppy mills", which really is a very bad business. They mass breed animals for sale, keep them in poor conditions until they unload to a store, or kill them if they aren't saleable. Often no love or attention to the individual dog or parent dog, so you are risking neurotic dogs ( not that you are totally free of that problem with SPCA dogs, either)

Animal shelters should cost less also.

Disadvantage would be if you want pedigreed dog to show or breed. Animal Shelter dogs must be spay or neutered in most places before adoption.

Because those are pets that have been abused, stray, or helpless, so you help them find a good home/owner like yourself. You also help keep the rodent population down in your community because there are ALOT of strays (depending where you live) and they are free << lol
