They knitted while the men chopped of the heads of the aristocracy. I know that's flippant but I couldn't resist it.Sorry.
Seriously they supported the men by looking after the wounded and looking after the farm or home in their absence. Alas it did little for their standing in society although it is said that they did start the move towards better treatment of women. It's an interesting subject so why not look it up for yourself?
