I've googled it and got back to a recording in 1924 but no details on who wrote it. It may be a traditional song thats been around that long that the writers name has disappeared into the ether. Can anyone help? Thanx.

The term "salty dog" crops up in various old blues and jazz songs. The first recorded version seems to have been by Papa Charlie Jackson in 1924.
