In general, yes. A percussion instrument is any instrument whose sounds are made primarily by one object striking another. The strings are struck by little hammers.
It's not considered a string instrument -- string instruments are those instruments played primarily by drawing a bow against the strings.
P.S.: Not sure why, but the banjo is considered a percussion instrument, too. Not sure what a guitar or harp is considered.
