Yes. It's frustrating for you maybe cause you weren't involved. But there aren't alot of options for a teacher when kids aren't fessing up and aren't helping with the situation. The idea is that if he/she punishes everyone maybe you guys will put some pressure on the one who wasn't fessing up to either behave better or fess up next time.

Not only is it not proper to punish the whole class for one person's mistake, it is also not proper to punish for something as trivial as a cell phone going off. Even if it is a rule that cell phones are to be turned off, people do forget sometimes.

Absolutely. People shouldn't have phones in school, and if the rest of the class is willing to suffer for 1 person, than you should be up for the punishment.

No, That certainly is not fair to punish
the whole class for one students mistake.
Would have been better to let one person
get by with that than punish lots of people
who were not guilty.

yup. someone should have spoken out. you were all guilty of letting that one person break the rules, therefore, you all broke the rules. I know its not 'cool' to rat someone out, but still, its not cool to allow someone to break the rules either. Its the 'don't get involved' attitude of society today that has the world in such a mess.

That is pretty crappy...if anyone had any sense they would have fessed up and had everyone write a paragraph. Now you have to write an entire essay.

No, it is not but there is not a whole lot you can do about it, and you would not have complained had the instructor just assigned the essay and NOT said that was the reason why. But he/she definitely over-reacted. Maybe you can find out who it was and report them anonymously.

By punishing the whole class, everyone is mad at who caused it and it'll make everyone think twice before causing trouble. Teachers do that all the time.

No, it only leads to tense relations within the class and the culprit is not found. There is no need to punish everyone for the errors of one.
