In this country it seems like the lighter you are the more beautiful people think you are. It's so annoying. I used to model and do a lot of beauty pagents and alot of the judges said I was too dark. It seems like you have to be white or be a black woman who looks white(with straight hair, light skin) to be coinsidered beautiful. Why is our socitey so biased like this?

=O they said that to you!
I know(to the dark skin part) people are soo obsessed with light hair light skin light eyes....it's ridiculous
and about the straight hair part...they'll accept curly as long as it isn't tight and frizzed...like the typical black hair texture o.o
but that sucks though....they said you were too dark
I swear they're not allowed to do that...
This guy....had the nerve to put on his profile... in his dislikes....dark skinned girls...unless you're MAD pretty...=|
it seems like we have to try harder...to be beautiful through other's eyes
on BET.com...a guy said...all the dark skinned girls should stop hating on the light skinned girls just b/c they're prettier
Kind of knocks you off your feet a bit to see a comment like that
you try to ignore it...but it's hard...when you are raised in a society where fair skin is beautiful

Beauty is a cultural conditioned thing. And it changes over time. Just look at how the women looked in Movies from the 1940s. for one thing, yes they were almost all white. But one one that we consider beautiful looks like that now, not even the white cover models. Also there are a lot less White women held up as 'ideal' to us today.

i know first hand what you go through. every where i go people always tell me "you are a pretty black girl". why can't it just be you are pretty. it always has to be "black" as if because i am dark i am not supposed to be pretty.
and when the compliment is coming from another race, they always just say i am beautiful.
a lot of light skin girls are not pretty, and a lot white girls are also not pretty, they just have to load up with make-up, and us dark sistahs do not have to wear make-up and we are still just plain ol' beautiful. but our society has taught us that white and skinny is pretty. so yes the closer you are to white the prettier they think you are.

This type of thinking results from slavery and to think some people think it is in the past. Black has never been seen to be beautiful, but I think it is beautiful and I would not be any other colour. I like my hair as well, it is me.

It's been like that for a long time, hon. There are famous dark skinned supermodels, tho. Alex Wek and Iman - oh wait, they're all in England! You may have to move there if you want to be a top fashon model.

Why do you have such a chip on your shoulder? get off your high horse..... the lighter you are the more beautiful you are!... why do white girls tan themselves? Why are you even entering beauty pagents to begin with, why don't you concern yourself with your brain or maybe filling in that chip. And the reason why the black women who are celebraties look "white", which by your definition is having straight hair, is because we are the ones who change ourselves.... i mean look at Beyonce, besides the booty she is white... but this is our own fault, we don't need to blame white people for everything. I mean do see white people on this forum whinging about how beauty is so tied up in how dark and ethnic you are, with all the white girls giving themselves skin cancer to be brown, injecting silicon into their lips to make them more "black" and wishing they were latino like Eva Longoria. No you don't.Maybe this is all just a sign of the world merging different qualities from all races to find a norm for beauty- Asian-white hair, dark skin, african lips etc. But there are more important things to worry about, and the only pressure to look a certain way comes from ourselves. And i wouldn't be treating the pagent world as a barometre on how the real world thinks.

Well, more people are getting tans nowadays and pale isn't the "in" thing like it use to be in the 90's. But being too dark is still looked down on.

I'm not gonna lie.

It's ridiculous.
Plus the ******* features are less desired. The more mixed you are, the more beautiful you're considered.

thats the media here in the usa and its like that all over the world actually. latino, indians, arabs, and other ethnic races go thru it. not just black women. even white women go thru too. and not everyone feels that way. it just seems like that but its not at all. ive actually run into a lot of women who were models and they came from all parts of africa and they were dark and beautiful. our society is ****** up!!!
