in a cell what is the purpose of the nucleolus?

The nucleolus serves to assemble ribosomes. It then helps the mature ribosomes to get delivered to their proper location. Recent research points to its roles in cell division, although those roles are still unclear. Other less known roles include regulation of tumor and oncogene components, and the modulation of telomerase function.

The nucleolus produces ribosomes, which move out of the nucleus to positions on the rough endoplasmic reticulum where they are critical in protein synthesis.
