Sylvia Plath was an American poet, noted for some very troubled poetry and a couple of rather troubled books as well. She ended her life sometime in the 1960's (editing now: 1963, according to Wikipedia). She was survived by her husband Ted Hughes, who later became a British Poet Laureate. According to Wikipedia, Ted Hughes passed away in 1998.

I don't know Silvia Platt, but Sylvia Plath was an American poet. Could that be who you're talking about?

I'm guessing you mean Sylvia Plath, an American poet/writer, her best known work being The Bell Jar.
