My mom and dad were divorced several years before, and unfortunately, my sisters were given to my dad. But just a year later, my dad became estranged from the family, and my mom took all responsibilities of my sisters, who have lived with her for the last 2 years. She doesn't have the money for a lawyer and desperately wants to have official custody of my sisters.

Look up your local government law site and find the forms to change custody due to circumstances. Also contact legal aide for help...but mainly at 14 they can choose what they want and I can't see it being a problem unless your dad is asking for them back.

Hi Heatherly, your mom should call the American Bar Association and ask for her local Legal Aid Society. Legal Aid assists people who do not have the money to retain an attorney. There are attorney's there who will pick up certain cases pro bono (meaning for free). Keep in mind, nothing is guaranteed, but it's a start.

The first think your mom is going to want to do is get a lawyer. Oh, wait, I am sorry. I suppose she should save up enough money for a lawyer. It could be very dangerous to do this without a professional.

She'll have to go pro se, which means she represents herself in court. It can be done, even though some judges don't like it. The important thing is to really do your homework.

For starters, I recommend custody prep for moms.

Good luck to you from another non-custodial mom who lost to an abuser:)

the girls are old enough to decide who they want to live with,a judge will usually take that into consideration,as long as the parent they want to live with wants them and can provide for all their needs
