Or has the institution strayed from its original purpose. Does it contradict itself? Not referring to just the present Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court over the last century.

No, I don't trust my freedom with any court. I trust my freedom with my freedom of speech, and mostlyl my right to keep and bear arms, as gauranteed by the 2nd ammendment to the constitution.

I absolutely trust the Supreme Court. Building on the precedents they have established, they have managed through multiple centuries to effectively protect and preserve the rights we all have as citizens of this country. Although at times they have made decisions that we now find to be morally unsound, the glory of the system is that they have returned to those decisions, reevaluated and overturned them, and will continue to examine all aspects of the law as long as people care enough to bring these issues forward. The only time in which I would be genuinely concerned for our freedoms is a time in which no one chose to stand up and criticize them. Only then is our country in any real danger.

Currently, we have no other choice as to trust the US Supreme Court. Some may call certain decisions "contraindications", but those contraindications are reflections in the change in times/culture in America. As long as there are lawyers out there, someone will be fighting to make sure our freedoms are protected.
