Why do you think the Black community has a hard time allowing Whites to learn about our culture?

It's really a shame that I've asked a legitimate question to try to gain some understanding here, because I continue to see questions form Whites who assume that all black people hate them. For people to make light of my question is as offensive as a racial slur. The comment about being lazy was uncalled for and will be reported.

YO!! For real people, We don't have a culture? Then I'm sorry I was under the assumption that we helped build this country, that we were proud black people who have overcome the adversities that were set before us so many years ago!!
I know the strength of African blood runs through my veins! And I am prod of all of the Black men and women who have given themselves time and time again in ways of art, music, science, and literature.
How can you not see these things!!??!!

Good question. The truth is that we have an easier time understanding white culture because we have been subjected to it through our schooling, work, life experiences. Whites however don't understand the culture because they have simply not been subjected to our culture. Our culture is not portrayed well enough in school. In the work place diversity can be a joke. Many of them just don't have the life experience of dealing with us. I don't see many whites wishing the could be black.

So it simply comes down to trust. When someone doesn't take a legitimate interest in you, do you trust them?? We think of bad experiences when we enter white neighborhoods or getting pulled over by the cops. So we group these experience as our "white" experience. I think they have the same impressions about coming to the hood. Yet we perpetuate these impressions and take pride in them don't we. I think some times the things we take pride in slang, clothes, etc. is to draw attention to us because I still feel we are not use to being seen.

How do they learn about us? Movies, videos, etc. essentially is their "black" experience. Hollywood potrays mostly the negative aspect of our culture so I think at times that is what we embrace. Yet the best source of information is a Black man or woman and yet that is the least utilized.

It comes down to trust and communication and we are just not a trusting community.

If you look at Blues Traveler, Elvis, Eminem & disco there's this trend where white people 'learn' about our culture appropiate it for themselves make a bundle of money & never donate 1 drop back. (well Ok, Eminem does give back to the community, but you get the point.)

Its probably due to lots of distrust. Blacks have little control over most things in this country, thus you hear that "whites steal" black culture once they learn about it. Additionally, some blacks might just want to hide their own ignorance.

i think it might have something to do w/ possessiveness.

as an Indian, I am very protective of my culture, and I become very easily offended when other people try to mimick Indians (food, clothing, yoga, henna, etc).

its MY culture, and, well...... they just wouldnt DO its right.

thats my take on it. i feel proud of my culture, and i dont want to share it w/ ppl whom i feel would not understand anyway.

Maybe because we want to have our own thing for once you know? It bothers me that our culture is still distant to us in so many ways. We don't have traditions like Hispanics, Asians, Europeans, and Africans. Us Black Americans have to learn how to improve ourselves and our culture.

What culture? We don't have any traditions. And no hip hop is not "black culture". There are more non-blacks into hip hop than actually blacks.
