Is there a way to check if existing wall insulation is done properly or if there are any gaps? What about buying or renting a scanner to scan the walls? If I hire a company to fill in our walls with wall insulation, how do i know if they are doing it right?

Figure out how much insulation is needed for your walls...plus watch them install the stuff. The amount of insulation used should come close to your estimates. Most folks that install insulation are fairly trustworthy. There's not much to be gained from not installing it properly and ensuring proper coverage. Just be home, watch the process and don't be afraid to ask questions if something doesn't make sense to you.

Good luck

There is no way to check the insulation in your walls with out a special tool that shows heat loss. There is foam insulation which can be added to the walls by drilling small holes in the dry wall. you know it is full when the foam comes out of the hole it is being put into

Yes, there is a way to check for insulation thickness but you'll have to go to "this old house" web site for the name of the company that does it. There are several companys that will come into your house and use a camera that looks like a reg. video camera but shows cold areas in black so you can see where you are losing heat. This is all these companys do. But you have to go to their web site to find the names and addresses of the companies. I watched them do it on their show last weekend and it was really cool. They even show you easy ways to fix the problem that won't cost you a fortune.

i don't think there is any way to detect insulation other than the wall being open. if your'e going to hire someone to do this in your home, watch them to make sure it is done right or however it is you want it done.
