Why using "THE" before Philippine ?

It's actually the Philippines--plural. Just like THE United States and THE United Kingdom (which is plural because it's united). It's made up of many islands thus making it plural not only grammatically but geographically.

The Gambia is another country which prefers the name to include the word "the". Merely preferences.

We use "The" before any country etc. It just sounds grammatically correct.
