Final Cut Pro from Apple. But you must use an Apple computer.
If you want the best program available, you need to be able to afford it, and this one necessarily includes the price of the computer needed to run it.

I would argue Final Cut Pro, the most complete editting system for Apples, over other professional programs like Avid or Media 100. As far as layout, and features, they are all pretty much potentially the same. But I've found Apples have always handled media editting better, and Final Cut offers a very stable and safe experience that can be run on your home Mac.

The FREE open-source editor for Linux, Cinelerra, is also something to keep an eye on.

If you want the best, get the one which TV companies use which is "Vegas 6 + DVD Suite The Professional HD Video and Audio Productions". Nothing beats it. NOTICE THE WORD USED TO DESCRIBE IT ---> "Professional".
