Hi Waggy,

Thanks for your question. The most polite way of breaking up with someone is to be honest and upfront about it. Do it in person if possible. That way, you've shown the person you've been dating that you respect them and that you are being truthful.

Try to avoid making statements that you don't mean. If you never want to see them again, avoid saying the cliche "let's just be friends." Also try to be understanding, especially if the person is hurt by the break up. But again, be honest and then - move on.

Honesty is always the best policy and I agree that commenting about just being friends is not a good idea. If friendship is going to happen it will come in it's own time after the hurts are over.
Try to be calm and not get into a shouting match-just state your case and turn around and walk away. But do be kind and use words not to add to hurt.

A clean break is always best. There really isn't a neat, gentle, way to break someone's heart.

It is a lot easier to just say it and be done with it than to mess around with "let's be friends" or any of that bull.

Best to simply state the truth and walk away.

If politeness is the only concern, then say something like, "PLEASE get the hell out of my life."
