No, turning it off always saves more energy. That's why lightbulbs are being replaced with compact fluorescents.

Fluorescent light use more energy if turned off and on If you are going out of the room for a short time it is best to leave the light on as it will use more energy to turn it on again. If you are leaving the room for extended time then shut it off. That is not why compact florescent are replacing light bulbs. compact florescent use less energy to produce the same amount of light as bulbs

now I'm confused !!
I was told turning a light on & off chews up more power but
the best way to know for sure is ring up energex & they will give you the right facts
