the english spelling came first like fount (font)
american thought it made more sense to spell it color, but english isn't supposed to be phonetic!
Also
travelling (traveling)
honour (honor)
its annoying when someone has left the spell checker on US

because america got independence from the English. spelling some words differently from the english was part of being independent.

In Great Britain, typesetters are paid by the letter, and therefore have lobbied extensively and continuously for keeping archaic longer spellings.
