Me and my girlfriend swam with them in the Dominican Republic. They were captive but the experience is something i will never forget. Ocean World in the Dom Rep is the worlds largest man made marina used for this purpose. Obviously they can't talk but you can tell they are happy and very well cared for. If people try and put you off swimming with them in captivity, ignore them. It is not to be missed.
Make sure you do your research first and make sure it is a well run marina and they are well cared for. Ocean World was one of the main reasons we went to the Dominican Republic. A friend of mine has recently been to Cuba and went there but said it was not an enjoyable experience and the dolphins did not look healthy.
I would love to swim with them in the wild but realistically it will not happen.

I swam with Dolphons in captivity at a dolphin rehab place (for dolphins with injuries not drugs and alcohol addiction) in the carribean and it was fantastic, although a bit short on time.
They were very gentle and if you just floated, let them come to you and made soothing noises they would happily float there with you for ages, it was lovely. Just make sure you do it somewhere that is responsible with conservation in mind rather than tourism!
I would like to try it in the wild, but I'm not sure you would have quite the same up close/controlled xperience, not sure. Have you looked at Discovery Cove info? I've heard that's good.

Erm, I live in the UK... i went on holiday to Florida in the US and swam with dolphins in Discovery Cove next to Sea World. The anticipation before i actually got to swim with them was immense. However, when i was actually with it it was like a show rather than an experience even though you were physically interacting with them. It was an experience don't get me wrong but for that kinda price tag i dunno... if your thinkin' of swimming with Dolphins i reckon there might be summit in it in the wild, cos that really is swimming with Dolphins. When it was outta their natural habitat it was just like, it was like a trained pet acting to you. you know what i mean? Swimming with them in the wild is cheaper and a better experience probs, but apparently is not good for wild Dolphins? can't remember where i heard that... anyways hope that helps...

I've never been a big dolphin fan. But I did change my mind 2 years ago when I saw them in Egypt.
...you dive and when you less expect it there are some dolphins in front of you... not in capitivty, not in a reserve, just in the wild... AWSOME
5 dolphins were dancing and playing around me, I was in 25m of water. I'd give anything to do it again!!!

Yes, it is amazing. I swam with them in Mexico on honeymoon 4 years ago, along with sharks and stingrays. We spend a full day on a dolphin training programme where u were taught how to do all the hand signals. I would recommend anybody to do it. They were in an enclosed compound, but it was in the sea.

It's neat.
Not always worth the price you pay for being able to do it.
Consider swimming with the manatee's too. That is even more awesome.
Crystal River, Florida anytime now until Feb.
