Does it have something to do with getting critters off themselves like itching, or are they just showing off?

there are many theories, but there are not a single correct one. So the real reason for them to do this is still unknown.

Who knows Maybe It feels good, maybe it provides the exposure to the sun that necessary to manufacture vitamin D ( if whales have a need similar to humans), it could communicate something to other whales, and maybe that's just the way their body moves when surfacing for air.

people dont know but they think that they either are doing it for fun,they catch their tails in the wind and it drags them though the water,and they sleep like that.
