It is one of those common cases of being an exception to any given rule. The English language has many loopholes for some reason.

Obviously, it is an exception. Most words are spelled strangly/arbitrarily in English because their spellings are holdovers from their root language(s). Science is from its origin, scientia, meaning knowlege.

Because whoever invented the word science decided it should be spelled this way.

i reckon a man must have made up the english language.its so messed up.there are so many rules , but there are so many exceptions to the rules..ive given up using logic to teach my kid ..ive just told her to cross her fingers and hope for the best...why the heck u need a k on the beginning of knife anyway!!!!

yeah... i think it is because of the pronunciation of the word mainly.. but i agree with most of the people here. English is a messed up language. Eh bien, c'est trop mal. :-)

My guess is that in the word "science" the "i" and the "e" are not in the same syllable. sci-ence

that is just a basic rule. it wasn't meant that it should be applied to every word.

Because that rule sucks and has all sort of exeptions that can screw you up.
