I have a dear friend of mine who afores ficion and fantasy books, so I want to buy her a good curl-up-by-the-fire book. I don't know what to get her though. I want to avoid a book with a series because she wants all the books in the series, not one and she has the reading level of about a 10th or 9th grader. Please!

The Hobbit.
I would've suggested The Lord of the Rings, but it's a series of 3 books.

You should try an anthology, which is a collection of stories. That way, it won't be too taxing on her concentration.

Right now, I'm reading "Hags, Sirens and Other Bad Girls" edited by Denise Little.

Other recommended editors: Martin H. Greenberg, Marvin Kaye and Terri Windling.

Another anthology is called "Chicks in Chainmail" by Esther Friesner. It is hilarious! (Be warned, there are sequels: "Turn the Other Chick" & "Chicks n' Chained Males".)

I recommend this book: Engdahl, Sylvia Louise. Enchantress from the Stars*. Atheneum, 1970.

Otherwise I recommend Uglies, but it is part of a series with Pretties and Specials.

It has just been reprinted and it is wonderful.

Umm you could try books by Terry Brooks, R. A. Salvatore, K. D. Wentworth, Anne McCaffrey, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis...they may have books that are in singles...or you could check the following websites
